Best Song Ever
You know I'm always on the hunt for beautiful tunes. Lately I've been into the ones that are of the sad but happy variety. It's like those songs that are so sad they make you smile. Or the ones that are hauntingly melancholy but really get at the beauty of things.

I've been migrating all my cd's to itunes so I can have a juke box while I work. And while doing so, I've been rediscovering those sad but happy songs. Here's a list and some links.

1. Orange Sky - Alexi Murdoch (so talented, and so cute - what are the odds). And now this album will always remind me of being at the ocean when I turned 30, when i got my life back, when the possiblities were endless, when all was right with the world, if for only a moment. Lyric:"When i am alone, when i've thrown off the weight of this crazy stone, when I've lost all care for the things I own."

2. Wedding Day - Rosie Thomas. Ah Rosie, so good. This is an extra good example of the road trip sad but happy song. Lyric: "So much for love, I guess I've been wronged, but it's all right cause I'm moving on. I'm gonna drive over hills over mountains and canyons and boys that keep bringing me down. I'm gonna drive under skyline, and sunshine, drink good wine at vineyards and get asked to dance. I'm gonna be carefree and let nothing pass me by never ever again."

3. Don't follow - Alice in Chains, Layne is gone, so sad, such sadness for a sad man. This song reached me in a dark movie theatre circa 1995 and it's still resonates. "Say goodbye, don't follow, misery's so hollow."

4. Humble me - Norah Jones -You know I haven't totally made my mind up about her latest album, but this song, written by one of her band mates is off the chart when if comes to the sad/happy genre. Lyric: "It never rains when you want it to."

5. Games shows touch our lives - The Mountain Goats - Dont' even get me started on the Mountain Goats. Lyrics: "people say friends don't destroy one another, what do they know about friends." oh and "our house sinking into disrepair, and but look at this showroom, full of wonderful prizes."

Lovely stuff. How about any of you out there. Do you know about the sad/happy genre? What songs do you pick?
