Miles from nowhere
Standing on the pacific ocean, miles from nowhere, as a milk carton from China, washes up at our feet.
Or as Cat Stevens would wail:
"Miles from nowhere
Not a soul in sight
Oh yeah, but it's alright
I have my freedom
I can make my own rules
Oh yeah, the ones that I choose
Lord my body has been a good friend
But I won't need it when I reach the end "

The pain in remembering
Ok, so Vegas was totally amazing. I mean I had a great time. Not in the "I wish I was in Vegas right now" just more of a "that was so great, I'm never going back" way that only Vegas can give you.
I have a million new inside jokes. I miss those college folks. With a certain group of people you develop a new language, words of your own, sentences and phrases of your own. It's a different place. It's almost like family. Ah, I'm nostalgic for things that happened just yesterday.
But nostalgia looks back, as the greeks said, nostalgia is the pain in remembering, the pain of homesickness. I think it's better to look forward. And make sure all of those people who used to be important to me continue to be important.- for years and crazy vacations to come.
The other thing I've noticed about being back home is that Seattle has to be, hands down, the best smelling city in the country. Ok, I'd like to exclude a couple places like Broadway and the Ave, but besides that Seattle smells sweeter than any other city. I'd bet on it.

Best Song Ever
You know I'm always on the hunt for beautiful tunes. Lately I've been into the ones that are of the sad but happy variety. It's like those songs that are so sad they make you smile. Or the ones that are hauntingly melancholy but really get at the beauty of things.
I've been migrating all my cd's to itunes so I can have a juke box while I work. And while doing so, I've been rediscovering those sad but happy songs. Here's a list and some links.
1. Orange Sky - Alexi Murdoch (so talented, and so cute - what are the odds). And now this album will always remind me of being at the ocean when I turned 30, when i got my life back, when the possiblities were endless, when all was right with the world, if for only a moment. Lyric:"When i am alone, when i've thrown off the weight of this crazy stone, when I've lost all care for the things I own."
2. Wedding Day - Rosie Thomas. Ah Rosie, so good. This is an extra good example of the road trip sad but happy song. Lyric: "So much for love, I guess I've been wronged, but it's all right cause I'm moving on. I'm gonna drive over hills over mountains and canyons and boys that keep bringing me down. I'm gonna drive under skyline, and sunshine, drink good wine at vineyards and get asked to dance. I'm gonna be carefree and let nothing pass me by never ever again."
3. Don't follow - Alice in Chains, Layne is gone, so sad, such sadness for a sad man. This song reached me in a dark movie theatre circa 1995 and it's still resonates. "Say goodbye, don't follow, misery's so hollow."
4. Humble me - Norah Jones -You know I haven't totally made my mind up about her latest album, but this song, written by one of her band mates is off the chart when if comes to the sad/happy genre. Lyric: "It never rains when you want it to."
5. Games shows touch our lives - The Mountain Goats - Dont' even get me started on the Mountain Goats. Lyrics: "people say friends don't destroy one another, what do they know about friends." oh and "our house sinking into disrepair, and but look at this showroom, full of wonderful prizes."
Lovely stuff. How about any of you out there. Do you know about the sad/happy genre? What songs do you pick?

Lookie, lookie: Labor and Industries involves customers to redesign Web site. Wow it's been a fun couple of years!
Ah yes, bad me for calling Nickels a wuss. Turns out it's up to King County, so therefore it's time to look at Ron Sims. Hey Ron, aren't you thinking about running for Gov next year? But he's leaving it up to the courts to decide. Ah, the times they are a changing.
Oh and so go Greg for doing what you can!

Greg Nickels is the mayor of Seattle. He's trying to do what he can, but he's still a big wuss for not going all the way. That is so Seattle. Hopefully the Stranger's call for protest will get things a goin'.
Come on Seattle, you don't want to seem behind the times, do ya?
