You've got sludge
The feature story on Salon today, makes me feel like they have been reading my mind. As I face reformatting the hard drive for the fourth time due to my recent overwhelming bout of worms and spyware, I just want to throw in the towel. I'm probably off to the store today for either new hard drive or should I just go ahead and switch back.
As one guy from Symantic puts it
The only thing that's stopping me is the fact that I need to see as a user does. And I know from analyzing web logs for my clients, Mac users in Washington State (as least using our web sites) amout for about .5-1%. And I'm pretty sure, from the looks of Victrola and Bauhaus, most of those are in my neighborhood. So what do I do? Also switching would require me to repurchase all the software I just bought I year ago, and some of those applications aren't available for the Mac anyway (I'm looking at you Visio). But then again, there is Virtual PC right?
I guess I need to do more research and resintall that fourth and final time. But I'm just about at the end of my PC rope.
As one guy from Symantic puts it
"They've tried many different things and it doesn't help. They'll end up reinstalling or cleaning it out or buying a new one -- a lot of this stuff is just so deeply embedded, it becomes more and more difficult to get rid of the gunk, the sludge at the bottom of your machine."

OmniGraffle Professional will let you import and export Visio files:

VPC works fine for basic stuff (i.e. no 3-D gaming) so Word processing, web browsing, email etc should be totally usable. It is also faster with older, less demanding versions of Windows. I hear that XP slows it down a bit.
This site is a good reference if you are looking for software equivalents:
http://guide.apple.com/index.lasso
And some companies (like Adobe) have pretty compelling platform switch pricing that they offer. Adobe's program is something like 50 bucks for the app and some required paperwork where you promise to remove the PC version.

Good stuff Jon, thanks. The kool-aid does look very refreshing and delicious.

OmniGraffle kicks ass. Very well designed software, and not from Microsoft: two things going for it!
By the way, we ordered our new baby today (since Apple finally announced the new versions). With any luck, we'll be ready to ship this one on to you within a week or so.
Mum and I saw a MacMini last week in Cleveland. Ohmygoodness it's so damned CUTE. You want one.

Yay, I'm so proud. I just may cry. Unfortunately, the letters to the editor in response to that article are not very nice. Though the supportive ones are pretty cool, and some are downright hilarious, such as the one I copied to my blog... :)
However, I'd be a bad worker monkey if I didn't mention the MS AntiSpyware beta. It seems to work okay, though it seems to start scans at most inopportune times.

Hmmmm Switching sure does sound cool and all, but If you decide to stay on the MS side of things here are some suggestions:
Antivirus - I can't say enough mean things about the Big Players - Symantec & MacAfee - I find that their updates are often released too late, and not at all effective in picking up many variants - try AVG from www.grisoft.com - Some kooks from The Czech republic put it together or so I am told. Been using it exclusively for over a year with no major headaches.
Anti-Spyware - Adaware from Lavasoft, andSpybot Search and Destroy - I run them both on a regular basis, as they each seem to pick up things that the other one misses. (Both Free for personal Use)
Zone Alarm - Software Firewall. Disable the XP SP2 firewall and let a real program take care of the job. Surprise! Free for personal use - www.zonelabs.com
And while I can appreciate using multiple browsers when doing your web dev work, if you are still using IE for your primary browser, get on the Firefox bandwagon.
I have cleaned up about a dozen or so PC's or friends and co-workers over the past year and set them up as i describe above. None of them have had a major relapse since.
I'm a huge fan of emulation, so I can appreciate the VPC on OSX idea, but I think it will be a substantial enough performance hit to shy away from it. (Though I have no experience with it on G5 hardware)
Good luck with the cleanup, whatever you decide.

So, clean up is underway, it looks like 4th time is the charm, thanks to my ISP and of course all the wonderful support folk in my life (featured above). I think I'll stick by my PC for now. It's like an abusive relationship, but I'm going back one more time. I've got all my xtras in place, let's hope she holds :)

In addition to what Curt said you might want to also add A squared. It removes trojan horse viruses and worms. You can also get a free version.
Firefox is the bomb. They took everything that made Netscape a better browser than IE and tweeked it. For a news junkie like me it also makes web searching and organizing much easier.
