Surfboards and a Soaky Neko

I love Westport. I really do. It's friendly, chill, not too crowded - especaily for a Saturday in August. The waves ranged from really good to really not so good, whereas my surfing ranged from absolutely crappy to not bad, not bad at all. If only I could spend a year or two doing it everyday.

After the weekend, we made it back to the Zoo to see Neko Case, no not in a cage, but at Zoo Tunes. A fantasitc show that was improved, not ruined by the rain storm that happened half way through. Seattlist has a mini-review Getting Wet with Neko Case.

Hmmmm, well - I might want her groomed

Ok, so I'm searching around for a place to board Sass while we are at the coast. We're staying with J's folks who have more than one cat. And good lord knows that Sassy has a hard time keeping her prey drive at bay. In addition, we plan to surf and while she proved to be good about waiting on the shore on Vancouver Island, I don't think we can just let her loose down here in Washington.

Anyway, was out looking for places and this one was highly recommended by a number of folks, but I just feel a little nervous about the types of services they might offer:

Weekend Carnage

Over the weekend, I enjoyed a camping trip with Jeff and Ryan. We found an amazing free spot right on the Cle Elum River in the Salmon la Sac area. Not only was it beautiful on the river, but our site was constantly shady which was helpful in the searing heat of Eastern Washington.

Since there was a burn ban in effect, we had to make due with the light of lantern and a citronella candle. The candle, picutured here, was an unfortunate death magnet for hundreds of moths. We awoke the next day to find this gelatinous, wingy, bug mess. But at least they died doing what they loved: flying directing into flames.

I have to wait a whole year

But I totally know what I'm getting Pet Junkie for her birthday next year.

Hang with Rick Springfield? Sure, for $1,000 - '80s heartthrob now selling grown-up fans a ‘Gold Package’ of access.
Springfield realizes that in the early 1980s, at the height of his fame, he couldn’t have given fans the kind of access he does today. Nor did he need to. Going out into the audience would have been, well, perilous.“I would have lost an arm because it was that frantic thing,” he says, his face and thick, dark hair barely changed from his Tiger Beat days.

“I’m not saying it’s just me, but there must be something in the music that is still meaningful,” he said.

Movie recommendations

The amazing film Grizzly Man opens this weekend here in Seattle and in several other cities. I saw this film back at SIFF this past Spring. It a haunting tale of the sad circumstances of one slightly unstable man (and his girlfriend who never appears in the film). Documentarian Werner Herzog narrates the film and is almost a character in his own right. It almost seems like Herzog feels an affinity for Treadwell.

When we were in Costa Rica, we met a young surfer from Kodiak Island who of course knew a lot of Treadwell. He told us how the locals thought he was crazy and got what he deserved.

Yo mamma

If you haven't already seen Mr's T's tribute to moms you really should.

In other related mom news, my friend Portia is due like any day. Well actually she was due yesterday, but Maple just wasn't ready I guess. Anyway, she's blogging about mommie land here including a photostream. She's a funny lady indeed.

My day, by the numbers

Number of pages I've written today: 8
Number of times my computer has froze and crashed: 9
Number of times word autorecovered: 2
Number of swear words per crash: 3.2 (approx)
Number of hours until next possible appoint at the modestly named "Genius Bar": 3.5

At this rate I'll be going back to using the PC.
