Based on his thoughts, I'm thinking a roomba would make a good present for someone who:
- has multiple pets
- not be a slob, but not enough of a clean freak to keep up with the regular pet hair challenge of sweeping once a day
- not have crap all over your floor
- have hard woods or tiles
- enjoy watching automated appliances swirl and dance accross the floor

Doh, not at all what I meant to post above... Blogger, why won't you let me erase my stupidity - oh wait that would eradicate most of my blog.
You definitely have the gist of it for sure. And those who know me well, would be scratching their heads, and saying "How are you no longer a slob?" Well, I've worked away from pure slovenly, and now deal on a level of compartmentalized clutter. The Roomba is more than happy to go around things, so as long as you can keep the main area of your room accessible, you'll have pretty decent results - i.e. put all your crap in the corners. And it does a fine job on carpet, I just wouldn't trust it on a carpet of any significant pile height. And for those who want a robot to do their bidding, but have no interest in floor cleaning, iRobot has announced that they will be releasing a 'hackers' model, with no cleaning apparatus, but a RS-232 port built in for ease of programming. Try that with a swiffer kids!
